Mario Kart World launched alongside the Switch 2 carrying the heaviest cargo in games: it had to sell a console, follow the best-selling racer ever made, and justify tearing up a formula that did not appear to be broken. Twelve months and several major updates later, the verdict has clarified — and it is largely a happy one.
The structural risk was connecting every course into one continuous landmass. On launch day that read as a tech demo with genius attached; today, with more interchange routes and events threaded through the world, the road-trip texture has become the game's identity. Knockout Tour — the 24-player elimination marathon across linked courses — is the best new mode this series has produced since Double Dash, full stop.
The racing underneath
Strip away the map and the core holds. Handling is the series' most nuanced yet, with charge jumps, rail grinds and wall rides that raise the ceiling for skilled players without punishing the back of the grid. Item balance received two meaningful passes since launch and now sits in a sweet spot: chaos as seasoning rather than the whole meal. At 24 players, races that should be unreadable somehow are not — a UI and design achievement nobody praises enough.
The open question
Free Roam remains the asterisk. The world between races is beautiful and thinly populated — collectable medallions and P-Switch challenges pad it, but the missions-and-secrets mode this map deserves never fully materialised. Battle mode, similarly, still feels inherited rather than reimagined.
Those gaps keep World shy of perfection. But judged as a racer — the thing a family actually does with it on a Friday night — this is the deepest, most generous Mario Kart ever made, and the intervening year has only widened its lead.
The Verdict
The boldest structural rethink Mario Kart has ever attempted, now polished into the racer every Switch 2 household ends up owning. The open world is a promise only half kept — but the racing is supreme.
